Azov
Azov is a town-fortress, that is more than 900 years old. It attracts with hoary antiquity monuments, original beauty. Azov has witnessed Venetian merchants, Tatar-Mongolian horde, Turkish janissaries, famous sieges of Don Cossacks, Azov campaigns of Peter the Great, that opened the entrance to the Azov Sea, and then to the Black Sea for Russia. The 300-year war glory of the Russian fleet dates back from Azov.
Till nowadays in the town you can see interesting monuments of military engineering art: fortress walls, Alexeev gates, the shot gallery with the diorama «The attack of the Azov Turkish fortress by Peter the Great troops in 1967». The Museum of Regional Study, that comprises more than 240 thousand exhibits, including the unique Trogont elephant skeleton.
