Novocherkassk
In 1805 according to the plan of the Don Army Ataman, the cavalry general Mikhail Platov, a new Cossacks capital Novocherkassk was founded in the Don steppe.
The town was built in accordance with the best European town-planning models with spacious squares, wide avenues, and green boulevards. Until the October Revolution Novocherkassk had been the administrative center of the Don Army, the town of the military officials and Cossack nobility. Nowadays the town still has the status of Don Cossacks’ capital. Architectural constructions, connected to Don Cossacks’ heritage, are still in their original view. These are mansions of the nobility, the building of Officers’ Assembly, the military office, the Archway of Triumph, the main Cathedral of the Cossacks’ Army, the buildings of the Cossacks Military School named after Alexander III, the Ataman’s Palace, the Don Cossacks History Museum.
The Novocherkassk Museum of Don Cossacks History comprises the Ataman’s Palace, the Museum-House of the artist Ivan Krylov, Mikhail Grekov Memorial Museum, the Don Cossacks History Museum with Cossacks reliquiae: Ataman’s fasces, colours, cold steel, reward weapons of officers of the Don Cossacks Army.
