Rostov
Rostov-on-Don is the capital of the Don region, and of all South Federal okrug, founded in 1749 according to the decree of the empress Elisabeth II.
The city received its name after the Saint Dmitry Rostovsky fortress, built to defend the south of Russia. The city extended on the borderline between Europe and Russia and that fact influenced its culture and architecture. The classical European style is mixed with eastern luxury, and nowadays Rostov is remarkable for its charm. The river, which reflects quarters of the city, makes Rostov especially beautiful.
The Rostov embankment, old side-streets with merchants’ mansions, the public garden in the main square, shady gardens, the left bank of the Don with small cozy cafes and exotic restaurants are romantic places of Rostov. At the same time in Rostov there are huge modern microdistricts with wide avenues, industrial and cultural zones, trade centers and numerous markets.
Rostov can satisfy all caprices of its gests. Theatres and cinemas, a zoo and a racecourse, museums and the Philharmonic Society, a delphinarium and aquarpark are open for them.
Only in Rostov you can taste a genuine Don borshch (cabbage soup), breams and crayfish, enjoy cracking fried sunflower seeds.
The main Rostov attraction is its citizens. They are courteous and polite as Europeans, hospitable, hearty, and spirited as Asiatics. The beauty of Rostov women is praised by poets and writers, that have visited Rostov. It is not by chance that at the «Miss Universe 2005» competition Russia was represented by a Rostov girl.
