Aksay
The first documentary evidences on the Cossacks settlement within Aksay dates back to 1570.
The town was situated on the borderland and repeatedly attacked by Turks, Tatars, and Nogaishes, however the convenient location on the high Don bank, on the crossing of land roads, leading to the Cossacks’ capital — Cherkassk, constantly attracted people. The main road to the Caucasus went through Aksay as well as the key passage to the Don. At the post station in Aksay the Russian writers and poets Alexander Puskin, Mikhail Lermontov and Leo Tolstoi stayed on their way to the Caucasus. These days there is a museum with a beautiful collection of cartages, samovars, and things reflecting distant past of Aksay.
At the outskirts in the 18th century there was a fortress with a customs post. Nowadays it is restored. Numerous labyrinths, underground passages, premises with arched ceilings, the exhibition of antique weapons delight guests greatly. There is a military and historical complex next to the old fortress, an open air exhibition of Soviet and Russian Armies Military Equipment of the 20th century.
