Starocherkassk
In the territory of the Don there is not more interesting and old place, regarding the history of the Don Cossacks, but stanitsa Starocherkasskaya, «the capital of Don Cossacks», called Cherkassk in the past. It was Cossacks’ town already in 1570. The first record of Cherkassk is dated 1539. In 50 years Cherkassk became the capital of Don Cossacks. Here Stepan Razin called Cossacks to attack Moscow and Kondrat Bulavin began his uprising. On 18 August 1696 there was the first in the history of Russia fireworks display in honour to the capture of Azov.
The keeper of Cossacks history and monuments is the Starocherkassk Reserve Museum, the biggest museum center in the South of Russia, which is under the protection of UNESCO. The Reserve Museum comprises the territory of the former Cherkassk with over 100 monuments of architecture: St. Peter and Paul's Church, Kondrat Bulavin's House, the House of the trade Cossacks Zhuchenkovs, the belfry, the Cathedral of Resurrection with an outstanding example of wood carving, the unique golden five-tiered iconostasis. In Maidan, the main square of Starocherkassk, you can meet the master Nikola, who will surprise you by his carving skills. Besides you can visit the only in the South of Russia Ataman's estate with such expositions as «The Old Town Cherkassk», and «The Culture and Everyday Life of Don Cossacks».
