Taganrog
Taganrog is world-famous as the homeland of the writer Anton Chekhov. The State Literary and Historical-Architectural Reserve Museum comprises unique Chekhov’s places: Chekhov’s House with an atmosphere of the merchant’s family modest life, Chekhov’s Shop Museum, where the writer spent his boyhood and youth; «The Writer and The Motherland» literary and memorial exposition about biographical and creative connections of the writer with his town.
The town Taganrog was founded in 1968 on the shore of the Taganrog Bay as a fortress and a harbour for the first in the history of the Russian Navy. The place was chosen by Peter the Great. The foundation of the town was connected with the fight of Russia for safety of the southern frontiers, for the outlet to the Azov and Black Seas. Till 1783 Taganrog had been the main base of the Russian Navy. Later it became a trade center.
In the downtown you can find buildings of the 18th century. The Taganrog Drama Theatre, built by Italian architects, is the monument of the theatre architecture. In the old merchants’ mansions there are the Museum of Arts, the Museum of regional Study and Town-Planning, the Museum of the circus artist Alexander A. Durov. A legendary stone staircase connects the old city center with a picturesque embankment. In front of the staircase there is a Greek sun dial, which is a symbol of Taganrog.
