Vyoshenskaya Stanitsa
Vyoshenskaya Stanitsa with golden sand beaches, super fishing, fish soup in the fire, free Cossacks songs, abundance of mushrooms is one of the oldest left-bank Cossacks’ stanitsas of the Don, famous all over the world as the homeland of Mikhail Sholokhov.
The pine forest approaches the stanitsa from three sides. From the right high bank of the Don you can see the vast Don steppe — green, feather-grassy, flowering with azure colour in May, scorching in the midsummer heat haze, with dry winds, bringing wormwood and thyme scents.
Here Mikhail Sholokhov began his literary career. There is his grave in the apple garden next to the house where he had lived for 40 years. At the moment that house as well as the other three, where Sholokhov lived and worked, belongs to the Sholokhov Reserved Museum. The collection of the museum completely consists of things, which belonged to Mikhail Sholokhov.
In the end of May on the birthday of the writer folklore holidays take place on the Vyoshenskaya land. Their main hero is a folk song. The holiday starts in the morning with the sunrise as in ancient times. With songs, dances, humorous sayings the festival goes to the stanitsa center and lasts till the late evening. The festival involves writers and poets, theatre and cinema actors, professional and amateur creative groups, and thousands of spectators from all over the world.
