“Architecture of south Russian towns”
The program acquaints with monuments of architecture XVIII - XIX centuries, features of the Don architecture, town-planning on Don. 5 days, 5 excursions, 5 museums.
Day 1 |
Breakfast. Bus tour to Rostov-on-Don. Acquaintance with the architectural monuments of the 19th-20th centuries and architectural styles: the classicism, the baroque, the gothic, the modern, the constructivism. Visit to the Cathedral of Saint Virgin Birth (19th century). |
Day 2 |
Breakfast. Bus tour to Starocherkasskaya stanitsa (30 km from Rostov), the former capital of free Don Cossacks (the middle of the 17th century – beginning of the 19th century). You can view the architecture of old Cherkassk: the House of trade Cossacks Zhuchenkovs, the Ataman’s Palace, the Petropavlovsk Church, the Church of Transfiguration, the house of Kondraty Bulavin, the streets with Cossacks’ kurens, among which you can find one of the 19th century. However the true beauty of the Don Region is the Cathedral of Resurrection with an outstanding example of wood carving, the unique golden five-tiered iconostasis, and the unique hip-belfry. Day 3 |
Bus excursion to Novocherkassk (35 km away from Rostov). Novocherkassk is an ex-capital of Don Cossacks. There you can see the Ataman’s Palace, the Archway of Triumph, the buildings of the officers’ assembly and military office, mansions of nobility, visit the Cossack’s Army Cathedral of Resurrection built in New Byzantine style in the second half of the 19th century. Return to Rostov. Visiting the museum of Don Cossacks. |
Day 4 |
Breakfast. A bus excursion to Taganrog (67 km away from Rostov). Central Taganrog is declared to be the historic and architectural reserved area. You can find blocks of houses built in the 18th century and get acquainted with architectural monuments of the town: the stone staircase, the sun-dial, the former Italian Opera House, the Alferaki Palace, the Palace of Alexander I. Visiting the museum “Town-planning and Everyday Life of Taganrog”. |
Day 5 |
Breakfast. Excursion to Azov. The town attracts tourists with the monuments of ancient times: ramparts, made by the instructions of Peter the Great, buildings of the “Powder Magazine”, the monument of military engineering art (the 17th-18th centuries), the “Attack of the Azov Turkish fortress by Peter the Great troops in 1967” diorama . Return to Rostov. |
